เพราะโควิดที่ทำให้หนังหนีไปลงสตรีมมิงเยอะขึ้น จนออสการ์ 2021 ต้องรื้อกติกาใหม่ ไล่เรียงกำหนดการบนปฏิทินใหม่ ส่งผลให้เวทีรางวัลที่ศรัทธาในวิทยาการภาพยนตร์ต้องเปิดรับหนังสตรีมมิงอย่างไม่อาจเลี่ยง ในขณะเดียวกัน ปีที่ผ่านมาอเมริกาและฮอลลีวูดก็เกิดการตื่นตัวเรื่องความหลากหลายจนมีการกำหนดกติกาล่วงหน้าไว้แล้วว่าออสการ์ในอนาคตจะต้องแตกต่างหลากหลาย โดยเฉพาะเพศและสีผิวที่จะไม่ให้ชายเป็นใหญ่และ all white จนเกิดข้อครหาอีกต่อไป
ปรากฏการณ์ที่ว่ามาทั้งหมดได้ปรากฏให้เห็นในรายชื่อผู้เข้าชิงออสการ์ 2021 แล้ว
– ปีนี้สตูดิโอที่ประสบความสำเร็จบนเวทีออสการ์ที่สุดก็คือ Netflix ที่มีลุ้นถึง 35 รางวัล! และหนังที่เข้าชิงสูงสุดก็คือ Mank ที่ชิงถึง 10 รางวัล
– ไวโอลา เดวิส ที่เข้าชิงนำหญิงจาก Ma Rainey’s Black Buttom เป็นนักแสดงหญิงคนดำที่เข้าชิงออสการ์บ่อยที่สุด
– เป็นครั้งแรกที่ผู้เข้าชิงหนังยอดเยี่ยมมีชื่อโปรดิวเซอร์เป็น all black นั่นคือทีมผู้สร้าง Judas and the Black Messiah
– เป็นปีแรกที่มีผู้หญิง 2 คนเข้าชิงสาขาผู้กำกับ คือ โคลเอ้ จ้าว จาก Nomadland และ เอเมอรัลด์ เฟนเนลล์ จาก Promising Young Woman
– จ้าวยังเป็นผู้หญิงคนแรกที่เข้าชิงถึง 4 รางวัลในปีเดียว คือ หนังยอดเยี่ยม, กำกับยอดเยี่ยม, ตัดต่อยอดเยี่ยม และ บทดัดแปลงยอดเยี่ยม
– นอกจาก Netflix แล้ว ปีนี้ยังทำสถิติเข้าชิงสูงสุดของ Amazon Prime ด้วย โดยเฉพาะจาก Sound of Metal ที่ชิงถึง 6 รางวัล รวม One Night in Miami และ Borat Subsequent Moviefilm เป็น 12 รางวัล- ปีนี้เป็นการเข้าชิงครั้งแรกของ Disney+ และ Apple+ ด้วย
– ปีนี้เป็นปีแรกที่สองหนุ่มเอเชียเข้าชิงสาขานักแสดงนำชายด้วยกัน คือ ริซ อาห์เหม็ด (ปากีสถาน-สหราชอาณาจักร) จาก Sound of Metal กับ สตีเฟน ยอน (เกาหลี-อเมริกัน) จาก Minari
